LIMASSOL DESIGNATED AS EUROPEAN CITY OF SPORT FOR 2020

Limassol, the city that will host in 9 May 2020 for third consecutive year the Dorians Coastal Challenge, has been officially named European city of sport for 2020. The recognition comes from ACES Europe – the European Capitals and Cities of Sport Federation. The title is awarded to a municipality that has an official population ranging between 25,000 and 499,999 inhabitants.

Limassol municipality has been chosen due to its adherence to the principles of responsibility and ethics, its awareness to the fact that sport is a key factor for aggregation of the society, its efforts in improving the quality of life and the psycho-physical well-being of its citizens and its achievements in completing the integration of different social classes in the community.

‘Limassol will create new sports facilities and upgrade the old ones’

Joyful for the recognition, Mayor Nicolaides stated that “It was an aim of the municipality to claim the important title of the European city of Sport and its attainment will constitute the beginning of an essential upgrading of sports facilities in different areas of our town”.

Mr. Nicolaides also brought attention to the long-term goals of Limassol to create new sport facilities and to upgrade the old ones. The municipality is also planning to establish sports facilities near the coastal area, aiming to host international events.
